Water gushes from Roger Court in El Cerrito to Potrero, Navellier, and Plank

UPDATE: As of 2 PM, the water has slowed to a trickle. As of 1:30 PM Friday, May 22, water is gushing out of Roger Court, heading down Potrero, turning right onto Navellier, and then left to the bottom of Plank Avenue. In some places it is staying in one gutter, others it crosses into the street, and other places it is filling both gutters. In some places, it has gone on to the sidewalk and also moved mulch and gravel. It does not seem to have reached any houses and is flowing down a storm drain at the bottom of Plank Avenue. Firefighters and at least one other truck from the city of El Cerrito are on the scene. The emergency number that EBMUD has for reporting  water problems has been tied up since at least 1:08 pm.  Videos -(above text) Water coming down Potrero and turning at Navellier -Water coming down Plank Avenue, where it went down a drain toward the bottom of the street. -Water running on Navellier from Potrero to Plank -Water running from Roger Court down Potre...

Opinion: What El Cerrito Really Needs

Image: The Public Safety building that needs replacing, the Senior Center that closed and was never replaced, and the Community Center that needs repair Update :  El Cerrito voters overwhelmingly reject Measure C Update/Opinion: Moratorium on BART library needed Update/Opinion: Listen to Ktsanes By Betty Buginas With ballots due June 2, I want to recap what I’ve written about Measure C, which leads to the strongest reason to vote no: It’s insane to commit to pay a huge tax 30 plus years into the future that can only be spent on one need.  El Cerrito has so many others - a new public safety building, a senior center, and repairs to the community center and pool (yes it needs more). After beginning to question whether the Plaza BART station would be a good place for a library and finding out we wouldn’t own the new facility, this is the first piece I wrote in July 2025 . I was appalled when I reflected on the misinformation the city has spread, and that I had linked from ...

[Press release] Sacramento, CA – This morning (May 14), Governor Gavin Newsom announced in the May Revise that he will provide $125 million through Proposition 4 to support the acquisition of the former Golden Gate Fields property in Albany and Berkeley. The property will be purchased by the Trust for Public Land and transferred to the East Bay Regional Park District.   “Our waterfront is our greatest public asset, and this investment is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to turn this iconic site into a park for all Californians to enjoy,” said State Senator Jesse Arreguín. “I applaud Governor Newsom for his bold vision – this new waterfront park will expand shoreline access, connect residents and visitors with the East Bay’s most cherished public spaces, and advance climate resilience.”   The 161-acre former Golden Gate Fields property sits along a prominent stretch of open space along the East Bay, and would fill a gap by connecting Albany Beach, the McLaughlin Eastsh...
