The Portola Middle School site in El Cerrito will be the first stop on a tour for media and community members the evening of June 22. The group will then tour Adams Middle School in East Richmond Heights, and end with a meeting of the West Contra Costa Unified School District 7-11 Committee at the Serra campus, a few blocks from Adams.
The WCCUSD 7-11 Committee has been convened by the school district to determine whether four previously closed school sites should be declared surplus in order to be sold or leased, which would generate revenue for the district, or whether they should be used for another purpose, such as workforce housing or other public use.
Attendees are advised to wear close-toed shoes, as the Portola site is unpaved.
Schedule:
5:30pm - Portola Site Tour: 7250 Portola Drive, El Cerrito. Tour will begin at the UC Berkeley Garden entrance on Portola Drive, east of the Invictus Academy.
6:15pm - Adams Site Tour: 5000 Patterson Circle, Richmond. Tour will begin at the gate south of the original main entrance to Adams Middle School.
A public meeting of the 7-11 Committee at the Serra Campus Multi-Purpose Room at 6:45pm, following the site tours. The Serra Campus is located at 6028 Ralston Avenue, Richmond.
Decades of El Cerrito students attended Portola for junior high/middle school. When the school district wanted to rebuild the campus, it was told by the state that the combination of earthquake and slide danger made it an unfit location for a public school. The campus was demolished in 2012. Students attended school temporarily in portable buildings at the lower, safer part of the site. The school district closed Castro Elementary School and renovated its site to serve as the new middle school. The school was renamed for Fred Korematsu. The lower portion of the Portola site is currently used for a charter school.
