One Cerrito Vista tennis court reopens months after being closed by a sinkhole

After being closed for months due to a sinkhole, one of the tennis courts at Cerrito Vista is open again. The second court awaits further repair and is blocked off from the open court with sandbags and a 6-foot fence. Any tennis balls that make their way over the fence will have to stay put for now.

In March, a 10-foot sinkhole formed in the court, according to a staff report for the June 16, 2026 City Council meeting. The company hired to investigate the cause of the sinkhole discovered a storm drain pipe 17 feet below the courts had ruptured, allowing soil to enter the pipe, leading to the sinkhole. The company determined that a 15-inch storm drain pipe was failing and filled with silt. The city ultimately ordered replacement of 325 feet of pipe.

The city was forced to relocate summer camps planned for the courts to Harding.
